We sort of knew it already: while Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, Hi5, Orkut, and Friendster were all founded in the U.S., social networking is a worldwide phenomenon. New statistics from ComScore show that sites like Facebook are growing rapidly across the globe, even as that growth slows down in their home country.

Earlier on Tuesday, performance firm Pingdom released numbers pulled from Google Insights for Search, showing that different social networks have very different levels of “interest” across the world. ComScore’s numbers, also released Tuesday, underscore the fact that social sites are increasingly global in nature–and sometimes unexpectedly.

According to ComScore’s numbers, social-networking sites may be nearing a peak in North America. The industry’s foothold in the U.S. and Canada grew only 9 percent from June 2007, but in Asia it grew 23 percent, in Latin America 33 percent, and in Europe 35 percent. And social networks grew a whopping 66 percent in the Middle East and Africa. The 9 percent growth in North America meant that it was the only region of the world where the growth of social networks did not outpace the growth of the Internet-using populace as a whole, which ComScore pegged at 11 percent.

The fastest-growing site is, not surprisingly, Facebook, with a 153 percent increase in very special visitors noted. Most of that growth is international–its domestic growth was estimated at 38 percent. Hi5, a San Francisco-founded site with a large foothold in Latin America, grew 100 percent. Friendster, another Bay Area social network, grew 50 percent thanks to a renewed interest among Asian audiences. Growing at 41 percent is Google’s Orkut, at 32 percent is AOL’s Bebo, and at 19 percent is Skyrock, a France-based social network that remains extremely popular among the youth in its home country.

News Corp.’s MySpace, still the biggest social network in the U.S., isn’t doing quite as well internationally. Its very special visitors have gone up only 3 percent year-over-year, ComScore stated.

“Facebook has done an exceptional job of leveraging its brand internationally during the past year,” ComScore executive Jack Flanagan stated in a statement from the company. “By increasing the site’s relevance to local markets through local language interface translation, the site is now competing strongly or even capturing the lead in several markets where it had a relatively minor presence just a year ago.”

Facebook’s internationalization strategy has consisted of leaving the single site intact but allowing members to translate it into the local languages of their choice. MySpace, with its focus more on media consumption rather than communication, has launched several dozen localized editions of the site instead.

MySpace representatives have said that the site’s aim is to gain a long-term foothold across the world, not to be a hot global fad. At the same time, it’s been engaging in high-profile marketing projects outside the U.S., and at this point it doesn’t seem to have produced results yet.

Six Apart is announcing Tuesday night the launch of Movable Type 4.2 (download from CNET) and Movable Type Pro. The 4.2 platform gives blog publishers better performance, according to Six Apart. But the really interesting thing about this launch is the new social features in MT Pro.

Movable Type Pro will enable “social publishing,” which is a fancy way of saying readers of MT blogs will now be able to do much more than just reply to posts in the comments. Readers will get profiles pages with “walls,” and the ability to rate other posts and comments, and to follow other blog members.

Six Apart also has added an aggregation widget called “Action Streams,” that allows bloggers to automatically pull in their activity on other sites, like Twitter or Flickr. It’s like FriendFeed, but with all the control and formatting you’d anticipate of a modern blogging widget.

The new Movable Type will have much richer social features for blog readers. WordPress is getting all social, too.

Meanwhile, WordPress (download from CNET) is converging on social networking as well. A new platform, BuddyPress, which is being built on the Wordpress core, will grant users to set up social networks. Presumably publishers will be able to graft these networks onto blogs.

The power of a blog is its network of users, and Web users are becoming accustomed to a culture of participation. Just as blogging is changing publishing, social networking is going to change blogging. So it’s appropriate the these products are getting new social features.

Lettuce, Mahlum, Wikipedia

Raisin bran may be dry, right out of the box, but you can be sure that gallons of water were used to make every bowlful.

One third of all water used in America goes to irrigation. With droughts becoming the norm in the Southwest, and, now, in the Southeast, we might want to rethink the way we water our crops and the types of foods we choose.

We don’t want to get to the point that North African countries like Egypt are — facing water crises even as they try to grow more of their own food to compensate for increased shipping costs. But we might learn from the methods that arid region is applying to prevent catastrophe here.

Drip irrigation slashes water usage, limits soil erosion, enables safer use of recycled wastewater, and lowers labor costs. Drip irrigation systems are available for home use in backyard gardens and landscaping, so it’s not just an abstract concept that other people (read: farmers) can do. My urban building has a drip irrigation system installed on a roof garden.

Choosing foods that use less water is also something you can do, personally, to be part of the solution. Some crops are water intensive and others water frugal. The process of crop water use is called evapotranspiration.

Lettuce (especially iceberg) requires big water input, while cabbage requires very little. As an added bonus, cabbages and their related family, the brassicas, contain a great deal more nutrition than lettuces. Rich in antioxidants, the category often called cruciferous vegetables are linked to superior resistance to cancer and lowering of inflammation.

Beans use the most water of any garden-grown vegetable. Vine crops like cucumbers, melons and squashes use less water than many other crops. Like tomatoes, they are often over-watered in home gardens.

Choosing the foods you purchase with evapotranspiration in mind, and encouraging use of drip irrigation wherever possible are two ways you can keep the water flowing.
