Apple’s MobileMe suite of Web services suffered another outage Monday that affected an unknown number of its users.

Of the included services, Mail was inaccessible for approximately two hours. Earlier in the day we’d received scattered reports from users who were unable to access their mail. Those reports were later confirmed both through Apple’s MobileMe status ticker and Twitter’s real-time search tool. For those affected, all other aspects of MobileMe were reportedly up and running.

Monday’s problems centered on a lack of access to Mail on three fronts: through the Web, on the iPhone, and on IMAP for use on desktop e-mail applications. The same thing happened in mid July, with enough blowback to cause Apple to offer a 30-day extension to both free trial and paying users.

Despite the known outage, there hasn’t been an update to the MobileMe Status Blog since July 29. The blog was provisioned specifically to address any known issues with the service. For now, most of the chatter has been on Apple’s support discussions with dozens of threads from users frustrated by the lack of communication and lost productivity.

As a reminder, if you’re a MobileMe subscriber with continuing issues, Apple has a special customer service chat tool for you access.

Advanced Data Centers (ADC) is creating what will be the first Platinum LEED-certified data center hosting facility. It’s able to get this high of a rating by piping outdoor air inside to cool the data centers, rather than relying only on air conditioners, taking the load off the AC for 75% of the year. It’ll make the Sacramento, California, building 25-30% more energy efficient, which clearly impresses LEED certifiers.

Because ADC’s billing structure has customers paying a portion of the power bill, customers have a nudge in the side to reduce their energy use as much as possible.

Data centers are a known culprit for high energy use, and many companies are looking into creating more efficient servers and ways to make existing data centers more efficient.

Additionally, the planning for the building includes options for customers to use water to cool their equipment, on-site power generation through fuel cells, and direct-current wiring to lower electricity use.

And it’s throwing in the now old-hat environmentally friendly building elements like capturing rainwater for landscaping and toilets, using non-volatile paints, and reducing heat absorption during the day via reflective materials. The building is under construction and will open early next year.

Facebook security chief Max Kelly has assured members in a blog post that the social network is “fighting the good fight” when it comes to several malware attacks discovered on the site in current days.

“We spent most of last night working on a fix for a worm, which was targeting people on Facebook and placing messages on walls urging users to view a video that pretends to be hosted on a Google or YouTube Web site,” Kelly wrote. “Less than .002 percent of people on Facebook have been affected, all of whom we notified and suggested steps to remove the malware.”

The worm was first flagged by security firm Sophos, just days after another one had been identified by Kaspersky Labs.

Kelly stated Facebook appreciates the efforts of watchdogs. “If we get a report of a bug or a hole from a user, a security researcher, a reporter, blogger, or anyone, we check it out and fix it as swiftly as possible,” he wrote. “In fact, we appreciate it when help comes our way from the many security experts and organizations out there.”

Sophos and other security firms have warned that social networks such as Facebook and MySpace are particularly rife breeding grounds for security attacks: they’ve massive user bases, plenty of outside developers working on the site, and lots of ways (messages, wall posts) to spread malware to unwitting members.

Facebook suggests that members follow a few basic security measures: report spam postings, install the proper Mac or Windows software in the event of a malware infection, and never share your Facebook password.

That last piece of advice will be tougher for Facebook to advocate as Facebook Connect, which lets external sites use Facebook login credentials, grows more commonplace.
