If you’ve accumulated hundreds or thousands of RSS feeds in your favorite reader you might be looking for a way to sort through them all. Of many solutions out there, Google Reader offers just a few ways to weed out lame feeds either by tracking inactivity or integrating tags for the sake or sorting. These tools are helpful, but far from a solution to save you from having to go through all your content to get to the good stuff.

Enter AidRSS, a ridiculously simple story sorter that uses PostRank, a rating system that measures how good a post is by factors like the number of user comments, traffic, and promotion on social news tools. All of this statistical analysis is applied to each story, giving it a score from 1 to 10.

The tool will let you sort which stories and feeds you want to view. You can rank from good to best, which will simply hide any posts that fall outside the threshold. You can also group together these stories based on the source, which will clump them together for simple perusal.

Adding AideRSS to Google Reader requires installing a plug-in. There are two flavors, on basic Firefox extension, and an add-on for the hacktacular Greasemonkey. Both have identical functionality.

One of the only downsides of relying on PostRank is that it simply doesn’t work for every blog post. Some items found on friends’ blogs or random RSS feeds that received low PostRank were very good, so simply ignoring them does not work. Mainstream content, on the other hand, gets at least a baseline rank.

Another thing to note is that it will noticeably slow down Google Reader performance if you’ve got PostRank turned on (note: there’s a toggle switch). You can still read and open any feed quickly, but it will have to pull in the ratings each time you open a feed from the source list, which can take a while.

A look at the new Last.fm homepage.

(Credit: Last.fm)

Social music site Last.fm has unveiled a new look: a slick new design, an iPhone app, a partnership with Logitech to stream music to compatible home stereo systems, and a host of new features.

With the new features, members can receive music suggestions instantly by naming a few bands and artists they like. Previously, they had to hook up their music libraries so that the site’s engine, or “scrobbler,” could read and analyze what songs they’d listened to recently. The site’s music charts now also update in near-real time.

Unfortunately, when I tried to load the new Last.fm, the site had crashed. TechCrunch’s Erick Schonfeld said he experienced problems, too. (Update at 12:33 p.m. PDT: the site loads but unreliably.)

That said, we certainly have seen recently that server outages aren’t limited to Twitter. Ironically, I managed to get Last.fm’s iPhone app working just fine.

(Disclosure: Last.fm is owned by CNET News parent company CBS Interactive.)

A California CEO is taking his product across the nation to Newburyport, Massachusetts, in an effort to win New England’s support for his product, the WindWing.

Gene Kelley, founder and CEO of W2 Energy Development Corp., told the Newburyport Daily News that his WindWing uses airplane technology to produce wind power more efficiently, affordably, and quietly than traditional turbines.

The drive for more efficient, power-capturing wind turbine designs is constant. “I looked at propeller-driven wind turbines and stated, ‘Isn’t there a superior way to do this?’” Kelley told reporters.

The Daily News describes the WindWing in detail:

A large parallelogram that resembles a set of oversized venetian blinds on a metal rod, WindWing has six wing panels that can tilt up and down in order to create energy. Sensors located behind the panels are able to detect wind direction and strength and adjust the panels accordingly.

The energy is pulled into the stem on the machine and pulled into a box at its base, where it can be converted by an electrical pump into electricity, compressed air or put through a water pump.

“Have you ever stuck your hand out a vehicle window?” Kelley asked. “Then you know how the WindWing works. Your hand tilts up as it is pushed up by the wind and down as the wind pushes it down; all you have to do is direct it.”

Kelley says that traditional turbine propellers capture only a fraction of the energy that could be harnessed from wind, namely because their surface area isn’t massive enough to capture and convert very much wind. WindWing can run efficiently in any type of weather.
