Blogging platform WordPress updated to version 2.6 late last night. It’s the latest major release since 2.5, which debuted back in late March and adds almost as many new features as it does bug and security repairs.

The video above outlines some of the major new features. The most useful of the bunch is aimed at bloggers on the go who can now take advantage of the same Google Gears integration introduced to WordPress.com earlier this month. This “turbo” mode downloads some of the files and scripts from your blog to your Gears cache, speeding up the page load when you’re on a crummy connection.

Also introduced with the 2.6 update is revisioning, letting you go back to an older version of the blog post and either re-publish it over the newer one, or review the changes. This will be most helpful on multi-author blogs where you’ll be able to track changes made by certain members of your blogging team with specific coloring based on author.

Another new feature that is long overdue is a built-in theme previewer, which will let you see a live preview of your blog using a selected theme. Previously you could only see what your existing content and widgets would look like with any theme by applying it over the one currently in use.

As part of the shift in blogging culture, there’s also a new “press this” button, which is simply a bookmarklet for posting content from whatever page you’re on straight to your WordPress blog. Similar bookmarklets from Facebook, FriendFeed, and Tumblr have proven to be an easy way to take whatever you’re looking at and post it, even if the content author does not have a ShareThis, or similar sharing tool integrated into their content pages.

Users of previous versions of WordPress should definitely update to the latest stable release. As many users have discovered (myself included), some of the security holes that continue to be patched with each release can keep your blog from being overrun with spam.

When I’m alone in the wilderness, I like to envision what I’d have to do to survive if I found myself in dire straits. I’d eat gnats and toads and catch rainwater using a low-tech system I’d devise with maple leaves, rocks, fishing line, and a canteen.

Or I could just bring the fog and dew harvesters designed by British inventor Alon Alex Gross. (Given the stack of evidence against my survival skills, this is probably a good idea.)

Gross’ prototype is more efficient than its predecessors because it’s made of lightweight, modern materials and is far more high-tech. Contemporary castaways can now connect Goss’ collector to the World wide web to determine the best spot to catch moisture and to monitor the device from afar.

The invention isn’t just for spoiled Westerners; afar, those who are unfamiliar with high-tech gadgetry can use it to collect clean drinking water. The device may prove a boon in the water-scarce Third World, where disease and infection borne through contaminated drinking water are a leading cause of death.

This is a whole lot cheaper than some of the fancy-schmancy water collectors we’ve seen lately, hanging out instead with the other easy-to-use concepts.

Goss’ dew collector weighs less than a pound and can collect just under half a gallon per night. It features a special laminate foil that attracts dew and a sensor that reacts to atmospheric changes and opens/closes the device, depending on conditions. His fog harvester can collect just over 2.5 gallons in 24 hours.

Blinkx, whose technology lets people search for videos hosted elsewhere on the Internet, is making it possible for other Web sites to incorporate its search results and share any resulting revenue.

Through a program called Red Label, the company is opening its application programming interface (API) so other sites can pipe video search queries to Blinkx, retrieve the results, and publish them, stated Chief Executive and founder Suranga Chandratillake.

“If you’ve fewer than 10,000 searches per day, you can have access for free. If you’ve more than 10,000, we ask you to monetize it and share with us,” Chandratillake stated. Sites can incorporate Blinkx’s advertisements and split revenue evenly; those sites that already have monetization under way must work out a specific revenue-sharing plan with the company, he added.

Blinkx already had several one-off search deals with various sites including Ask.com and Lycos, and the Red Label project makes such partnerships easier to set up in the future, Chandratillake said. Blinkx has two new deals with such partners that are using the API: MSN UK and Rambler Media, he added.

Blinkx searches videos not just by analyzing textual metadata such as titles, tags, and descriptions that accompany videos, but also by performing speech recognition to convert audio to text and by visual recognition that can recognize text and some famous faces in the videos themselves.
