It sure looks like Google Earth, but it’s not.

A company called Sentinel, funded by the U.S. Defense Department, has posted a demo of its client software on YouTube that shows the viewer flying through 3D cityscapes with live videos embedded in them.

A higher-quality version is on the Sentinel site.

The software, AVE Video Fusion, “combines Google Earth-like features with live camera videos projected on a 3D model” the video caption says. “This program is NOT Google Earth. It is written from scratch using C++ and OpenGL.” It runs on Personal computers and requires no custom hardware.

Applications include wide-area surveillance systems such as those at military bases, airports, railroad stations, borders, coastlines, harbors, and power plants, according to Sentinel’s site.

The El Segundo, Calif.-based company was founded in 2005 by personal science and electrical engineering professors at the University of Southern California.

Here’s the five-minute YouTube video:

The Klimatec’s Base 1 AirWater machine is a promising technology for supplying clean drinking water from ambient air. The machine is able to pull as much as 5 gallons of water from ambient air each 24 hours.

It does this by blowing air into chambers where cooled coils cause condensation. The resulting water is run through an active carbon filter to remove any solids and then through a UV chamber to kill off bacteria. The AirWater has a heater and refrigeration unit so it can dispense hot or cold water.

This is could be a super-cool fountain for geeks to congregate around in the office; however, not only does it suck water from air, but it also pulls loads of electricity from your wall outlet.

While Klimatec has a solar-powered version, it will take a 480W panel to operate, so that just means some large solar panels taking up space and probably significantly adding to the price of the machine.

This energy factor makes it impractical for both of its two foreseeable markets — first, the aforementioned high-tech/geek-friendly office space, and second, places short on water supply and therefore likely short on money and electricity.

Considering it can come equipped with a mini-fridge, I have a feeling the former is more likely who they’ve their eye on, especially considering the lower tech, more practical water-trapping solutions already available for rural areas.

The only other market I have the ability to picture is richer countries who feel the tightening up on fresh water supplies. By the time something like this is practical to the public, the technology may be more energy efficient.

Five gallons of fresh, filtered water every 24 hours is quite a lot, especially when used in areas where water is tight and people know how to conserve drinking water. But that still means it only provides enough drinking water for a handful of people every day. Quite a few of these will be needed to handle large numbers of users.

Also, how much humidity in the air is required to get the amount of water claimed? And how much will this sucker cost? Dvice.com contacted Klimatec for these last two details and is waiting for a reply. We’ll keep an eye out for any updates.

Despite all these issues, it is a technology well worth pursuing, and I’m glad to see Klimatec making a good start of it.

Eventful For iPhone's interface.

(Credit: Dong Ngo/CNET Networks)

Eventful Inc., an event-driven social Web site, announced this day its release of Eventful For iPhone application. The software works on both iPhone and iPod Touch and makes it simple for users to find events and things to do in their local communities.

The application basically provides access to all of the Eventful Web site’s key functions through an iPhone-friendly interface. It automatically tailors search results and recommendations based on the user’s current location and integrates with the iPhone’s built-in applications such as Calendar and Contacts so users can easily share the events with friends or sync those with their desktop Outlook or any other calendaring software.

Eventful for iPhone has five navigational sections that users can access at any time, including Profile, Track, Featured, Search, and Demand. All of these sections are self-explanatory. For example, Demand is a tab where you can demand your favorite performers to come to your city and see which performers are most in demand throughout the world and in your location. You can also view your current list of demands and see all of the demands that your friends have joined but you haven’t.

The application is available now for free from Apple’s App Store.
