I guess this is what Disney would think about edgy: the company has reportedly acquired Ideal Bite, a “sassy” eco-focused e-mail newsletter that explicitly states it’s “not for readers under age 18.” The price was about $15 million, PaidContent reported. That’s a lot smaller than Club Penguin, which Disney …

We’ve covered a ton of floor planners on Webware, but none of them have been as cool as MyDeco. The tool throws in the usual assortment of tables, chairs, beds, and other living accouterments that you can price, buy, and move around in a customizable space.

The tool lets you emulate single rooms or an entire home by plugging in the dimensions and adding walls, windows, and doors. It also manages to give you a 3D view of what those items will look like in that space, not just from the top down like most floor planners. In this mode you can zoom around, or pinpoint any angles using a virtual camera and take snapshots to send to your cohabitants. It’s just plain cool.

I don’t think it’s really a perfect way to simulate the effects of moving actual furniture, but in about 10 minutes I had put together a pretty slick looking pad. Like I mentioned before you can actually buy items you like through the tool’s sister site, although it’s based in the UK, meaning if you don’t live there you’ll have to track down the local counterparts.

Furniture juggernaut IKEA has its own tools that are a little similar but they’re separated into kitchen, bedroom, and office, and must be downloaded and installed on your machine. In that regard, MyDeco’s got the upper hand since it will run right in your browser as long as you’ve got Flash installed.

Create your pad in 3D with MyDeco's floor plan tool. Whether or not you can afford the ritzy additions is another thing.

WOT in search results(Credit: CNET Networks)

If you’re the type to favor user opinions over editorials, the Firefox plug-in WOT might be the site-rating service for you.

Unlike Grisoft LinkScanner (Pro and Lite), McAfee Site Advisor (for Internet Explorer and Firefox), or the NetCraft Toolbar (for Firefox and World wide web Explorer), this extension, published by Web of Trust (WOT), relies on user-generated ratings seconded by Web-gathered statistics to determine key factors of site safety. Trustworthiness, vendor reliability, privacy, and child safety are the four vectors of participant voting. A lengthened color gradient from green (safe) to red (unsafe) offers five shades of ratings levels instead of the customary three.

Web of Trust ratings(Credit: CNET Networks)

Like the other site-rating tools, WOT surfaces ratings on the browser and from within Google and Yahoo search results. There’s also drop-down menu for rating sites from the search results page.

Extra context comes by way of a reputation scorecard that averages total users’ ratings, a link to Alexa statistics, user comments, and spam, fraud, malicious software, and customer service complaints. According to WOT’s Web site, it also garners some ratings from phishing and scam databases.

The extra user information is useful, particularly if you’re a more adventurous Web surfer, and it could indeed help guard users against zero-day security breaches for users who can attribute a compromised site to a malicious software attack in time. I’d advocate the extension as a companion to one of the algorithmic solutions above, but not necessarily as a replacement.

Sheryl CanterThis post is by Sheryl Canter, an on the internet writer and editorial manager at Environmental Defense Fund.

At a congressional hearing last Wednesday, Howard Frumkin, a senior official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said there was strong scientific evidence of major health problems due to climate change in the next few decades, including:

  • Heat waves that put children and the elderly at risk
  • Danger of droughts and floods from extreme weather
  • Increased food-borne and water-borne infectious diseases
  • Worsened air pollution due to higher temperatures
  • Migration into new areas of vector-borne diseases like malaria

At least he got to say it. Last October, CDC testimony on the health risks from global warming was censored by the White House.

Rep. Hilda Solis (D-Calif), who chaired the hearing, stated she suspected that “a layer of screening” continues to limit what CDC officials are granted to say.

While insisting that CDC had no position on EPA’s pending regulatory decisions, Frumpkin said, “…there is strong evidence that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas … and there is strong evidence that climate change affects public health in many ways.”
