Incorporating green products into a home remodel or home improvement project is getting easier, as eco-friendly products are becoming more practical and simpler to find and buy. We are not speaking about composting toilets here, but rather eco-friendly versions of traditional products and services that are on each homeowner’s checklist when they remodel.

As a homeowner/remodeler, how do you get started?  Below are seven must-see videos that pull together extremely practical green options for your home:

1. Eco-friendly fiber insulation

Natural fiber insulation (often called “cellulose insulation”) is one of the more eco-friendly options out there today for insulation. More than 7,000,000 tons of newspaper are used each year to make this green product. But is it safe to put shredded newspaper in your attic and walls?  Watch The Huge Burn to find out!

Video: The Huge Burn.

2.  Green countertops

Two of the biggest decisions made in a remodel are kitchen and lavatory countertops.  There are many eco-friendly options available including compressed paper fiber, concrete, terrazzo, and a few others.

Terrazzo countertop products are made from recycled components such as glass and porcelain, and are held together with special mixtures depending on the manufacturer (usually a resin or a cement).

How are these countertops made? How are the colors mixed? How is the glass polished so that it isn’t sharp? Here’s a fantastic video on the process, and a great overview of these beautiful products.

3. High-Efficiency toilets

Water conservation via your lavatory toilet is definitely a step in the green direction. Seriously though, do these low-flow high-efficiency toilets (HET’s) really flush? This little video puts the porcelain wonders to the test with golf balls, sponges, and more!

4. Make relocating green

Moving out of your home is often part of any medium-to-largesized remodel project. In most cases your belongings are packed up and stored in the garage, in a POD, or perhaps in offsite storage. Options to get green in the move-out process are starting to emerge. Check out this innovative option!

5. Energy efficiency = better mortgage

Whether remodeling, buying, or refinancing a home, you can actually save money by securing an Energy Efficient Mortgage (EEM). EEM’s provide homeowner borrowers with special benefits for installation of energy-saving improvements. With these products your lender will increase your loan amount to cover energy-saving improvements. Your overall monthly loan payment will increase slightly, but you’ll actually save money because your overall energy bills will be lowered.

6. Remodels are messy, stop junk mail and clean up!

100 million trees are ground up each year to make unsolicited junk mail. USPS says that on average homeowners receive 26 pieces of junk mail every week. (This sounds low to me!)

When you move out for a remodel project, your mail stacks up even higher than it does when you are living at home. It is so easy and affordable to halt junk mail.Do something today, and help our environment while you remodel.

7. Recycled materials and your landscape

Remodeling and new landscaping often go hand-in-hand, and fortunately the backyard playground for our kids is swiftly becoming a place where many eco-friendly product options exist for homeowners.  From playground equipment, to soft surfaces that break your child’s falls, you can get green simple. In our last video, see how recycled tires play a role.

While the latest trend in on the web dating has been video with sites like WooMe and SpeedDate.com, Youniverse (pronounced “universe”), which launched Thursday morning, is all about photos.

Instead of matching you up with people based on a fill-in-the-blanks personality quiz or a impromptu video chat, it attempts to appeal to the visual part of your brain by having you choose from a grid of thumbnails. Each thumbnail determines a various aspect of who you are and what you like and dislike. It’s actually kind of fun, and when you’ve done it will take all that information and stack it together into a ready-made profile.

When it comes time to discover people who match up, the site has a built-in tool that will let you see the ideal compatibility based on how they answered the same questions, as well as sliders that let you hone down the results by age, gender, and location. You can then dig a little deeper by visiting those people’s profiles, sending them personal messages, or exploring the people who they’re compatible with.

To help promote yourself, the site has a widget that can be put on your blog or social-networking profile (embedded after the break). I’m assuming most people wouldn’t want to do this, because it showcases some of your more private personality preferences.

Another Web service that’s experimented with the idea of using photos instead of text is Vidoop which lets you sign into secure sites or fill out human-checking security questions with pictures instead of words. We checked it out back in April of last year.

Youniverse lets you figure out your personality with pics instead of words or multiple choice surveys. This screen is just one part of a 15-step evaluation. When you're done you can compare your results with those of other users.

In the middle of May, Yahoo sent out a call to developers to develop customized search results using their SearchMonkey platform. This day, Yahoo announced the availability of Yahoo! Search Gallery. Search Gallery serves as a showcase for custom search add-ons that have been developed, such as Yelp, Last.fm, and LinkedIn.

Yahoo has a great concept here and one that could greatly improve the search experience for users. I was genuinely excited that customized results from sites that I frequent would magically find their way into my regular searches. While I still think that this is a good idea, the actual implementation needs some work.

Searching for restaurants, names, and other things that you would expect to throw back customized search results often does not. In the case of a search for my name, the LinkedIn entry was thrown in at the bottom of the page. Since I had explicitly told Yahoo Search that I want information from LinkedIn to show up in my searches, I would anticipate them to be given “above the fold” priority.

The current implementation requires you to manipulate your searches to get any customized results, in many cases.

I had to fool around with it for a while before it would throw back a customized result for one of my favorite local restaurants, which is absolutely listed on Yelp, and even then it would not give me anything. It wasn’t until I added the word “yelp” to the search that I saw a customized listing and it was a local.yahoo.com one instead of one from Yelp. There are obviously restaurants that custom results work for, but there is no reason why it shouldn’t work on any Yelp listed restaurant that comes to mind.

All complaints aside, this technology is definitely something to get excited about, but the implementation (whether on Yahoo’s end or the 3rd celebration developer’s end) is just not there quite yet. Look for this to make a large impact when they finally get it right.
