Apple might be getting ready to overhaul its .Mac service–or at least change the name.

New code within Mac OS X could mean the end of the .Mac name for Apple's Internet service.

(Credit: Apple)

A Russian site called Deep Apple noted that code within the Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.3 software update contains placeholders for the .Mac name that would allow Apple to drop in a new name at a later date. Dmitry Chestnykh of Coding Robots also noticed similar code within Mail and Safari applications.

Apple’s .Mac service is designed to help Mac users extend the capabilities of their iLife software to the Internet by publishing Web pages, sharing pics, and storing data, among other things. But it’s not exactly the company’s most popular service, and looks high-priced and out-of-date next to competing services from companies that make their living on the Internet.

The iPhone might be giving Apple a reason to think different about .Mac. If Apple were to revamp the .Mac service and turn it into something that ties Macs and iPhones together–and cut the price–they might be able to marshal an army of online Mac users and add a nice little chunk of revenue to the income statement.

But as John Gruber of Daring Fireball notes, a service called “.Mac” that’s morphing into something more iPhone-centric might need a different name. Long ago, in a distant era (January 2006) Apple trademarked a name called “Mobile Me” that seems to fit the bill, according to Gruber.

The pending code changes could also mean, however, that Apple wants to tie iPhones and Macs into other Internet services, perhaps having decided that others could do a superior job providing these types of services.

UPDATE 10:15am - Chestnykh found references to “Mobile Me” in the latest version of the iPhone SDK.

Valve’s Steam service is perhaps the best digital distribution network for downloading Personal computer games.

(Credit: Valve)

We love it when companies just get it. Valve Software and its announcement of SteamCloud is a prime example. As reported by John Walker at Rock, Paper, Shotgun, SteamCloud will let anyone using Valve’s Steam Computer game download and networking service carry over saved game files, mouse, and keyboard configurations and other player-specific info regardless of where you log in. In other words, if you’re at a friend’s house and you want to jump into a game of Team Fortress 2 on his or her PC, all you need to do is log in to Steam and all your settings are there.

Mr. Walker outlined several other features Valve is working on for Steam, including automatic driver updates and a hardware-compatibility check to make sure your Computer can play the games you’re interested in before you make a buy.

We’ve heard a lot of noise from other vendors, Microsoft specifically, about making it easier to play games on your Personal computer, but no one else has come up with a solution that ties in so directly to the games you want to play. Best of all, Steam, SteamCloud, and all of Steam’s community and player matching services are free via a easy download.

James WangThis post is by James Wang, Ph.D., a climate scientist at Environmental Defense Fund.

This month, while Arctic sea ice hits its annual wintertime high (such as it is; see previous post), Antarctic sea ice reaches its summertime low.

We’ve written before about the British Antarctic Survey’s report of a vast ice berg on the verge of breaking off the Wilkins Ice Shelf. Here’s more on what’s happening at the South Pole from NASA’s recent briefing on polar sea ice.

Even though the Arctic and Antarctic are both at the Earth’s poles, they’re not mirror images of each other. There are some fundamental differences between them. Antarctica is a land mass surrounded by an ocean, while the Arctic is basically an ocean surrounded by land.

Unlike the Arctic, the Antarctic typically has tiny perennial sea ice. There are two main reasons:

  • Because there are no surrounding continents, Antarctic sea ice can float northward into warmer waters where it melts.
  • Because it’s at a lower latitude, Antarctic sea ice receives more direct sunlight and heat in summer.

Nearly all the sea ice that forms during the winter melts during the summer.

Antarctic Sea Ice

Also unlike the Arctic, which is one of the fastest-warming places on Earth, surface measurements and satellite data in Antarctica haven’t revealed overall trends in temperature or sea ice area.

Warming and sea ice loss in some areas — notably the Antarctic Peninsula, where the iceberg is breaking from Wilkins Ice Shelf — have been balanced by tiny temperature change or even cooling and sea ice gain in other areas.

Still, that doesn’t prove there’s no warming trend in Antarctica. Satellite data has only been available since the 1970s. Earlier observations from whaling ships recommend that there was a greater sea ice area before satellite observations were available.

If Antarctica isn’t warming — or if it’s warming at a slower rate — it may be due to the atmospheric vortex circulation that surrounds it (from being a land mass centered at a pole and surrounded by ocean). This tends to hold in cold air. But that’s just one hypothesis that scientists are exploring.
